Funeral arrangements have been announced for Father Dominique Tyl, SJ. The prominent French priest, Jesuit missionary, sociologist and former director of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Saint Joseph passed away on August 29th aged 81 at the Conde São Januário Hospital.
Father Tyl’s farewell services will commence with a Vigil Mass at Saint Lawrence’s Church on Friday, September 11th, at 7:30 PM. The celebration will be presided over by Saint Lawrence’s Parish Priest, Father Bosco Chan, and will be followed by a Funeral Mass on Saturday, September 12, at 10:00 AM. The ceremony will be headed by the Bishop of Macau, Stephen Lee Bun-sang and concelebrated by the Provincial of the Chinese Province of the Society of Jesus, Father Stephen Tong, who will deliver the homily.
While the burial is tentatively scheduled for Saturday noon, immediately following the funeral mass, final confirmation regarding tomb availability is still pending from the cemetery, leaving cremation as a potential alternative if necessary. These services mark the final chapter of a remarkable life defined by over four decades of dedicated service to higher education, sociological research and pastoral action across Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China.
Born in Saint-Pol-de-Léon, in the French historical province of Brittany, in December 1945, Dominique Tyl entered the Society of Jesus at age 19, studied Chinese language and culture in Taipei—where he was ordained in May 1975—and later earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Fluent in Mandarin, Father Tyl’s academic career included directing the Center for Social and Cultural Studies and the Translation Institute at the Fu Jen Catholic University. He has also served as the secretary-general of the Ricci Institute in Macau and shaped the Social Work academic curriculum at the University of Saint Joseph, where he championed prison development programs and taught Master’s courses until his final days. Remembered by colleagues for his quiet dedication, Father Tyl’s expansive missionary legacy also included organizing historical archives for the Diocese of Macau’s ongoing 450th anniversary, conducting pandemic missionary work in Palau and assisting African French-speaking communities in Guangzhou.
Father Dominique Tyl “was warmly remembered by his colleagues for his tireless mentorship and quiet dedication”, Father Cyril Law noted in a tribute published in social media. “His contributions extended globally and locally”, the Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy of the University of Saint Joseph added.
“The way we understand religious life is an adventure. We never know what awaits in line, what will happen to us. I wasn’t even 19 when I entered the novitiate and I never imagined I would celebrate 50 years of priestly ordination in Macau”, Father Dominique Tyl told “O Clarim” in May 2025, just a few days after celebrating the Golden Jubilee of his priestly ordination.
